Dentures are artificial teeth that are custom-made to suit each patient's requirements. They are removable oral prosthetics that mimic the appearance of natural teeth, jaws, and gums. Dentures can be made in either a complete or partial form depending upon the extent of tooth loss. Call ATI Dental Care to learn more.
Dentures are classified into two types based on their form.
Complete Dentures: Complete dentures are a set of artificial teeth that replace all the natural teeth in both the upper and lower jaws. They are removable and can be taken off whenever required.
Partial Dentures: Partial dentures are made up of artificial teeth that replace only a few missing ones in the mouth. They are mostly used when several teeth have been lost, but most of the jawbone is intact.
Dentures can be customized for patients with significant tooth loss or extracted for other treatment purposes. The remaining tooth structure needs to be intact as this will help to stabilize the denture in place. Patients who do not have any natural teeth in their mouth can opt for complete dentures to replace them. If a patient wishes to get only some teeth replaced, then partial dentures would be fabricated and put in place.
The dentist will carry out a comprehensive examination of your mouth during our initial consultation. X-rays would be taken to understand your jawbone structure, gum tissues, and overall oral health. An impression of your mouth will be taken to create a 3D digital model that will be sent to a dental laboratory where your denture will be fabricated. In some cases, we may also use digital scans of your existing denture as a reference to create the new one.
During the next appointment, we will check the fit and comfort of the denture before placing it in your mouth permanently. The dentist will ensure they fit perfectly and comfortably by ensuring they do not shift or feel too tight or loose in your mouth. Once ready, you will be handed over your new set of teeth, which you can wear as and when required.
Dentures can last for several years if taken care of properly. But if you choose not to wear them, it is essential to clean them regularly so that dental plaque and tartar do not form on them. Regular cleaning also prevents oral diseases from developing due to a lack of cleanliness in your mouth. It is also recommended that you brush your dentures regularly so that food debris doesn't stick to them and cause stains over time.
